Comments: One of five species in this genus found in North America north of Mexico (Lafontaine and Schmidt, 2010, 2015), all of which have been recorded in North Carolina
Species Status: Lafontaine and Schmidt (2015) determined that specimens previously identified as Hyperstrotia villificans actually belong to H. nana, based on a re-analysis of the type speciemens. However, this group may actually represent a complex of two or more species as indicated by DNA bar-coding.
