Comments: Melanoplus is our largest genus of Orthopterans, with over 350 species occurring in North America (Cigliano et al., 2017). 38 species have been recorded in North Carolina.

Comments: This subspecies is similar in coloration to the nominate form but differs in its larger size (Scudder, 1897). Blatchley also mentions that it possesses a shorter and broader metazona, with its posterior margin more broadly obtuse-angulate (Blathely, 1920). The furculae of the male also appear to be more evident and the tubercle of the subgenital plate more inflated and prolonged upward.
