Comments: Periploca is a genus of around 36 described species of small to very small moths, with many similar species that require the examination of genitalia for identification. All of the species that were reviewed by Hodges (1978) are found in the United States and Canada, but others have since been described from South America. For the most part, these are somberly colored, immaculate moths with dark gray, dark-bronze or black forewings that lack raised scales. Periploca species lack an uncus, whereas closely related species of Pristen and Synploca have an uncus. We may have several species in North Carolina, but detailed genetalic studies of specimens have not been conducted to date to determine which species are present.
