DistributionInner Coastal Plain, so far as is known from annotated specimens at NCU. A specimen from Pender County (at FSU) is var. dumosum.

Mostly Coastal Plain, ME to FL and TX.
AbundanceRare on the landscape; uncommon to common where found. Populations size varies greatly, depending on water levels. So far, known from only four locations in NC. The NCNHP now (2022) tracks this taxon as Significantly Rare, with a State Rank of S1S2.
HabitatClay-based Carolina bays and natural depression ponds.
PhenologyFlowering and fruiting September-October.
IdentificationOf the various varieties of Bushy Aster, this one is the most distinctive, due to its usually single stem, short branches (sometimes none, sometimes long), and acute to short-acuminate inflorescence bracts. Stem leaves, if present, are broadly linear and taper to a point. Plant height varies from 1.0-2.5 feet.
