DistributionNC lower Coastal Plain. A review of the NC specimens of these two varieties was conducted in June 2023. IDs were verified/corrected. .

"VA south to s. FL and TX (mostly on the Coastal Plain); also in w. United States, Central America, and South America." (Weakley et al. 2023).
AbundanceApparently scattered on the landscape; individual populations reasonably large to large.
Habitat"Salt and brackish marshes" (Weakley 2023)
PhenologyBlooms from August to October.
IdentificationThis variety differs from P. odorata var. succulenta by being "Plants to 10 (-15) dm tall; involucres 4-5.5 (-6) mm high, the disks 4-7 (-8) mm in diameter", versus succulenta being "Plants usually < 6 dm tall; involucres 5.5-7 mm high, the disks 5-9 mm in diameter" (Weakley 2023).
Taxonomic CommentsWeakley (2023) did not include varieties in prior floras.
