DistributionAccording to the NCNHP database: "One documented occurrence; an 1891 collection from Swain Co. made by H.C Beardslee det. Elymus canadensis var. [uknown]. Specimen was viewed on-line and annotated (via spreadsheet note) by Julian Campbell in October 2021 to Elymus canadensis var. robustus.". The 2022 NHP database also lists Haywood County.

This taxon occurs essentially west of the Appalachians, east only to OH, KY, and MO. Thus, the occurrences in NC are southeast of the known range.

Identification
Taxonomic CommentsRyegrasses or Wild-ryes (genus Elymus) are noted by their evenly spaced leaves and elongate, terminal inflorescence that recall cultivated rye or wheat. Each floret produces several long, skinny awns (shortest in E. virginicus sensu stricto). Identification of some species requires a dissecting scope or at least a 10x handlens.
