DistributionThroughout the state, except not on the Outer Banks and scarce in the Sandhills.

Newf. to B.C. south to FL and CA.
AbundanceFairly common to locally abundant over much of the state; absent to rare, however, in the Sandhills and other areas in the southwestern Coastal Plain.
HabitatFresh marshes, fresh tidal marshes, openings in floodplains, floodplain backwaters and oxbows, wet meadows, montane seepage bogs.
PhenologyFlowering and fruiting late April-June.
IdentificationThe tiny spikelets on widely spreading and often lax branches are a good ID clue. What the seeds lack in size is made up in large numbers and in nutrative value to waterfowl, rails, etc.
Taxonomic CommentsThe nominate variety occurs in NC.

Glyceria is a genus with 2 groups of species. One has linear, elongate spikelets that are often appressed to the inflorescence stalks. The second has short, generally ovoid spikelets that are in a very open and branched inflorescence; note that in this group, G. melicaria and G. obtusa spikelets are rather appressed and the inflorescence is narrow to cylindrical. In all species the lemmas have prominent, raised ribs. In general, Glyceria species grow in wet soils.
