Distribution | Specimens of "C. berlandieri" have been annotated to varieties by experts, and a few of them prove to be var. boscianum. Curiously, FNA does not include this variety in NC, and maps it mostly on the Gulf Coast. The number of records in NC from apparently natural habitats suggests that this variety is native here. One NC specimen showing on the SERNEC database for NC was collected in 1941 in Carteret County; a second from Onslow County in 1961 was annotated to var. boschianum but filed simply as berlandieri (Wilbur and Beal 6496 DUKE).
Maritime, NY to FL and eastern TX.
Abundance | Found locally in several places in Carteret County plus Bear Island in Onslow County and Nags Head Woods in Dare County. However, the NCNHP considers the taxon as Historical (SH), based on SERNEC. One website editor (Sorrie) is aware of other more recent specimens and suggests a State Rank of S2?.
Habitat | Sandy maritime beaches, sand flats, low dunes, edges of brackish marshes.
Phenology | Flowering and fruiting July-October.
Identification | The keys in FNA (2003) and Weakley (2018) will suffice. In FNA there is an illustration of var. zschackei, which will give a general idea of what C. berlandieri looks like. Vars. boscianum and macrocalycium occur on maritime beaches; seeds of the former are 1.0-1.3 mm diameter vs. 1.2-2.0 mm in the latter.
Taxonomic Comments | Members of the genus are often found in saline to brackish sites, but also fallow fields, waste lots, and other highly disturbed places. Each flower produces male and female parts plus a calyx; they are very small and not at all showy. Weakley's (2018) key must be used with care, and a dissecting scope is almost essential for successful identification.
