Description: A pale orange-brown species with an orange face and white vertex. The base of the wings are a bronzy-orange, the the anterior half of the wings a darker brown with bold red wing venation. The commissure of the wings is white, forming a continuous white band that extends onto the middle of the pronotum to the white vertex. The legs are pale.

Distribution in North Carolina

Distribution: An infrequently encountered species, previously unknown from North Carolina; it has been primarily found in scattered states across eastern and central North America, but also as far west as Arizona.
Abundance: Rare, a few recent records from the mountains and Piedmont.

Habitats and Life History
Habitats: Shrubby areas, forest edge
Plant Associates: Acer, American hornbeam (Carpinus caroliniana), Sabal palmetto, Fraxinus (UDEL); has also been found [at least resting] on Common Milkweed (Ascleipius syriaca).
Behavior: Can be attracted at night with a light.
Comment: One of two members of Shellenius that occur in the United States; the other species, S. ballii, was also recently found to occur in North Carolina. Its coloration and pattern are strikingly different.
