Comment: Balclutha is a very challenging genus to identify. Most of the species cannot be conclusively identified without identification of a male specimen. And to further complicate the matter, many species have been synonymized and moved around over the decades, some New World counterparts have been split from their Old World counterparts while others have been lumped, etc. Blocker (1967) revised the genus in North America, but based his species concepts almost entirely on male genitalia. Additionally, plenty of specimens and images have been misidentified or mislabeled, and both native and introduced Balclutha species that closely resemble one another can be found in North Carolina; this has further confounded an already challenging situation. This page serves as an umbrella for any Balclutha documented in the state that cannot be conclusively identified to a particular species. Hopefully through collection of male specimens of various color forms and sizes, we may be able to clear up which Balclutha occur in North Carolina and better determine if there are any external characteristics such as size, color, or pattern that allow for identification of species from photographs.

Balclutha species that have been reported from North Carolina, or could occur in the state (lucida):

- abdominalis

- impicta

- incisa

- lucida, synonym floridanus

- neglecta

- punctata

- rosea, synonyms frontalis, hebe, guajanae
