Description: A very dark and bold species. The ground color of the head and thorax is dark tawny to brownish. The wings are mostly black and there is a bold, unicolorous white or cream stripe that extends across the head and thorax and down the inner margin of the wings, contrasting with the black wing color. Adult males are 5.2-6.6 mm long while females are 5.5-7.0 mm. (Kramer, 1983)
Distribution in North Carolina

Distribution: A widespread species, recorded across eastern and central United States into the Southwest; also found in Mexico, Guatemala, and Nicaragua (UDEL)
Abundance: Uncommon to locally common in the state, recorded in the eastern Piedmont and Coastal Plain, the latter of which is where a majority of the records come from.

Habitats and Life History
Habitats: Has been found near mixed hardwood forest.
Plant Associates: Sagittaria latifolia (broadleaf arrowhead, Alismataceae) (UDEL)
Behavior: Can be attracted at night with a light.
Comment: The bold contrast between the pale stripe and black wings and sides of the thorax helps distinguish this species from P. vibex.
